Young Voices Shine at the Debate Mate Primary School Finals in Birmingham

12 May 2025

On 29th of April 2025, Birmingham University hosted the Debate Mate Primary School Finals for the West Midlands, bringing together some of the region’s most talented young debaters. The event marked the culmination of months of hard work, with pupils showcasing their skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and persuasive argument.

Debate Mate, known for its commitment to social mobility and oracy education, empowers students from diverse backgrounds to develop essential communication skills. The Primary Urban Debate League has seen record participation this year, with schools across the West Midlands competing for a place in the prestigious final.

The finalists delivered compelling arguments on a range of topics, including e-sports and the importance (or not) of teachers, demonstrating confidence, teamwork, and analytical thinking—skills that will serve them well beyond the competition.

The atmosphere at Birmingham University was electric as students engaged in high-energy debates, tackling thought-provoking motions with passion and precision. Judges praised the students for their articulate reasoning and persuasive delivery.

The winning team, The Blue Coat Junior school (Walsall), saw strong competition from Regents Park, but their persuasive style ensured their final victory. The team will now go on to take part in the national final at the University of Oxford, where they will compete against top teams from across the UK.

The Rigby Foundation is thrilled to be partnering with Debate Mate from September, as part of our Inspiring Futures Programme, supporting the charity to deliver programs in 5 secondary schools, across Birmingham. The Debate Mate team will be working with students to build their confidence, to think critically, express themselves clearly, and to engage in meaningful discussions—all essential skills for success in education and life.

We know that children from disadvantaged backgrounds may have limited access to opportunities to develop oracy skills, which are crucial for academic achievement and career progression. Debate Mate’s programmes level the playing field, helping students gain the ability to articulate their thoughts, analyse different perspectives, and advocate for their beliefs. The programme also provides students with role models, networking opportunities, and exposure to higher education environments, inspiring them to pursue ambitious futures. Through our Inspiring Futures program and our work with charity partners like Debate Mate, we hope to support young people’s public speaking, teamwork, and confidence, helping to shape future leaders and break down barriers to opportunity.
